Jane’s been pretty cranky the last few days and we were finally able to have a conversation about it yesterday and she told me that she is very sad that kindergarten is ending. I asked her what she would miss most and she said the projects, so we decided to pick our own topics for projects to work on over the summer. Today she picked six topics that she wants to study over summer, and then she figured out that since there are 12 weeks in summer she could devote two weeks to each topic. We coordinated the calendar so that we will be in the midst of our “fish unit” when we visit the Monterey Bay aquarium in July and in June, when she is doing a week of Galileo camp, we will be immersing ourselves in information about the planets and she wants to build a model of the solar system. I asked her what we would be doing during the Lion Guard unit – since that is a TV show! – and she said she wants to learn about the animals and also make her own action figures. “Building things with unexpected materials” will involve using things around the house to make other things; the example she gave me is using spaghetti to make a porcupine.
