Conversation on the way to school this morning:
Me: Which tea do you like better, the peach or the orange?
Jane: Both.
Me: Oh, peaches remind me of summer fruit. I miss summer fruit. I mean, I like winter fruit, but I’m looking forward to summer fruit being back in season.
Jane: What’s winter fruit?
Me: You know, apples, pears, citrus.
Jane: Oh yeah we like those. What’s summer fruit?
Me: Berries and what they call “stone fruit”–any thing with pits–like peaches, nectrarines, cherries…
Jane: Olives….
Me: Hmm. Good point. Olives do have pits and they are a fruit, but I don’t know when they’re in season. They’re available yearround because they go through a process where they’re brined or cured. I’m not sure of the right word.
Jane: You mean they have to go to the doctor? The olive doctor? To get cured? [then laughs hysterically]
